The next set of vows in this series is from a wedding in January 2018. If you want to know more about this series, check out previous entries here!
A reminder: these vows are published to inspire you and provide you with some ideas for writing your vows; they’re not here so you can copy them word for word! Please also remember these don’t include the legally required vows – those words generally go at the start of these ones.
You are my Megs, my support, my infatuation but most of all, my person. You lift me up when I’m feeling down, you listen when I need an ear and you always have my back no matter what.
I remember when we were being introduced, I was told I’d never have a boring conversation with you, and I’d like to confirm that this is 100% the case; once the conversation starts, I never quite know where I’m going to end up, how my view of the world will change or what mind blowing fact I’m going to be introduced to. It is one of my favourite things about you and about us, and I look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.
Here, in front of our family and friends, I want to promise to always be there for you, celebrating all your achievements and being your shoulder to cry on during the harder times. I promise to dance randomly without provocation with you; to always be ready to arachnids from the house and to facilitate getting you nachos whenever you desire. I promise to always communicate with you, to do my very best to stay awake during long car rides and always be willing to match my level of silliness to your own.
Today, here, I get to marry my best friend, and I absolutely couldn’t be happier at the prospect of spending the rest of my life with you in it.
You are the person who makes me the happiest. If I’m having a bad day, I think of your face and it makes me smile. All you have to do is walk into a room and to me the world is a brighter place. You are that amazing that you lighten up the world. Even if it’s just mine.
I love you, but I think you and everyone else here already knows that. What’s more important for me to tell you is just how much I like you and the time that we spend together.
I like our random conversations that jump from philosophical to pop culture within a sentence. I like that we can spend hours in a room not saying a word, and both leave content knowing we’ve had a fantastic night together. I like that we are not afraid to make the other person think, to question ourselves and be better people afterwards. I like that I don’t have to worry about doing or saying anything silly or embarrassing around you because I know you’ll be there with a smile, a laugh and a hug. I can say this with all honesty; there isn’t anyone that I like as much as I like you.
With you, my best friend, at my side, I know that I do not have to worry about the future.
To quote one of your favourite authors, Terry Pratchett, “That’s the thing about the future. It could turn out to be anything, and everything.”
I do not know what the future holds, or where it will take us. But I can promise you a few things:
I promise that every day I will be prepared to face the next day beside you, the joyful ones and the heartbreaking, the mundane and the stressful. I promise to always listen to you and be fair to you, even if my ego might temporarily get in the way. Most importantly, I promise that I will always do my best, to be the person that lightens up your world.
I love you, you are my person and I can’t wait to see where tomorrow takes us.
