I Miss My Dad funeral reading
Here’s the next in my series of funeral readings you might like to consider for your loved one’s funeral or memorial ceremony. Some are sad, some are uplifting, some are comforting; there’s something for everyone here.
Readings are absolutely not a compulsory part of a funeral or memorial ceremony. Sometimes family members or friends desperately want to speak at their loved one’s funeral, but they haven’t got the wherewithal to write something themselves. Readings are a perfect stand-in: your emotions and feelings right there on the page ready for you to contribute.
Remember readings can be adapted – if your favourite reading is written for him, you can change it to her! If it’s written for Mum, you can change it to Dad or Grandma or Grandpa, whatever fits for you. Take out lines that don’t fit your circumstances. I just make sure to introduce such a reading as an adaptation.
I Miss My Dad, author unknown
Although I cannot see you
Feel your hugs or kiss your face
I’ll imagine you’re beside me
An unseen presence I will embrace
The night before you left us
Asleep no words were spoken
A gentle kiss placed on your head
Heaven’s gates stood halfway open
Reflections of that morning
Before you slipped away
Still replay through my daily thoughts
I will never forget that day
I cannot begin to tell you
Just what that has meant to me
The painful process of letting you go
The hole in our family tree
I think of you in silence
I often speak your name
All I have are memories
And your picture in a frame
I miss your hugs, I miss your voice
Your genuine “I love you”
The simple spring lost in your step
The illness got to that too
I don’t wallow much in sorrow
You wouldn’t have wanted that for me
Your wish to remain the strong one
Is the one you said I would be
And though some days it’s difficult
I still want to call on you dad
Your swift untimely departure
Makes me reflect on just what I had
Every time I think of you
My heart still fills with pride
Though I will always miss you Dad
I know you’re by my side
In laughter and in sorrow
In sunshine and in rain
I know you’re watching over me
Until we meet again
